Welcome to what may well go down as the last true great intercontinental marathon rally – a drive against the clock from London to the foot of Africa.
The Middle East
We are monitoring the Middle East situation on a daily basis and have contingency plans to route the event via Egypt should this prove necessary.
In January we travelled through Egypt on our comprehensive route survey and found some exceptional rally roads. Our local contacts are confident that the situation in Egypt is now stable providing us with the opportunity of an excellent start to our route in Africa.
It is not the policy of the Endurance Rally Association to take events through areas of unacceptable risk.
The Concept
We have been offered the unique opportunity to be flagged away from the House of Lords; the first time the Parliamentary buildings in Westminster have hosted an international rally. We will depart on New Year’s Day, January 1st, 2012, arriving in Cape Town at the end of January 2012.
The London to Cape Town World Cup Rally will endeavour to capture the spirit of the long distance World Cup Rallies of the 1970s. The event is not designed as a tour but as a “press on” driver’s challenge with Time Trials and a time-schedule to be maintained every day. The ambition is to revive the kind of rallying last seen on the 1977 London to Sydney marathon.
There has never been a rally that has linked mainland Europe with a complete drive of the African Continent from top to bottom – in the past, wars, famines, border disputes have prevented this. Our route from London will take in France, Italy, then take the ferry to Syria, Jordan and Saudi-Arabia before crossing to Sudan. All of these countries have an infrastructure of national motor-sport Federations and local motor clubs and the intention is to provide timed sections every day.
Eligible Cars
Entries are now available – we are looking for just 50 interesting cars.... cars you would cross the road to look at, with 50 interesting crews, to make the London to Cape town rally an unforgettable experience.
There are two Classes for the kind of car we all depend upon for our daily travel, the car that drives to the supermarket, the railway station, the school run, will prove something truly challenging by driving the length of Africa... the 1400cc and 1600cc Classes are designed to be the “ultimate road-test for a reasonably priced car” and a supreme driving adventure. There is a Class for 4x4s for those who want it less tough. And two Classes for Classics, up to two-litres and over two-litres. Given that the Peugeot 404, 504, and the Mercedes W123 six-cylinder saloons are to be found on every-taxi rank throughout Africa they are a sensible choice for those who value a freely available local spares supply. We particularly want to see the “iconic” Classics of the late ‘60s and early ‘70s such as the successful Hillman Hunter, 1800 Landcrab and Triumph 2.5 saloons.
