The AvD-Oldtimer-Grand-Prix from the 10th – 12th August 2012 is not only a unique historical racing event, but is also a central meeting point for the club scene and all classic car enthusiasts. A large number of car clubs will be putting up their tents in the surroundings of the Nürburgring, for example, clubs for the drivers of German models such as BMW, Mercedes, Opel and Porsche, the Italian group with the Ferrari Club, the Maserati Club, the Alfa Club Germany and several Fiat clubs or the friends of British models MG, Morgan, Rover, Triumph or TVR. The best of the club cars are competing this time for the "Club Crown 2011". The new award for oldtimer- and youngtimer clubs will be donated by "Motor Klassik" magazine and presented by the AvD partner Allianz.
The online vote which is already up and running is under
www.motor-klassik.de/Klubkrone. Cars can be registered in five categories: by way of example, either in the class "Coupe" (e.g. Mercedes-Benz 350 SLC or Volvo P1800), under "Convertible/Roadster" (such as a Triumph TR6 or a Peugeot 405 Cabriolet), in the category "Sports Cars" (Porsche 911 or Bertone-Alfa), under "Limousine/Touring/Van" (e.g. Jaguar XJ6 or VW Bulli T2), or in the category "SUV / Off-Road" (Jeep CJ-5 or Range Rover). The best three in each class are to be openly presented in the paddock during the AvD-Oldtimer-Grand-Prix. The winners will then be announced and crowned on the Saturday evening with the "Club Crown 2011" and of course receive their trophies.
Unforgetable Nordschleifen record
During the AvD-Oldtimer-Grand-Prix, the "Stefan Bellof Memorial Days" will also take place for the fifth time in the marquee of the Deutschen Sportfahrer Kreises. And so the man who was once the greatest talent in German motor sport continues to be remembered. Stefan Bellof was killed in 1985 whilst driving a Brun-Porsche 956 in an endurance race at Spa-Franchorchamps in Belgium. Two years before with a works car of the legendary Group C sport prototypes, Bellof had set an amazing best time on the Nürburgring Nordschleife. In the closing training for the 1000 km race, he drove with the 956 a lap time of 6.11,13 minutes and roared as the only driver to date with an average speed of over 200 km/h through the "Green Hell". In the exhibition "30 Jahr Porsche 956 im Windkanal / 30 years of Porsche 956 in the wind tunnel", lots of exhibits from Bellofs time with Porsche can be seen, some rare Porsche 956 wind tunnel models and even an original Porsche 956 that was under construction. Jürgen Barth will be coming as the guest, who was first able to test the 956 roll-out version on the works-owned track in Weissach.
For all Porsche fans, a pit-stop at the huge 14.000 sq/m Porsche Classic area during the AvD-Oldtimer-Grand-Prix is a must. A particular highlight in the marquees this year is a special exhibition for the 25th jubilee of Porsche Exclusive. The car manufacturer will in addition present a comprehensive offer of choice for the repair, inspection and restoration of classic Porsche sports cars.
Three-wheeler & "Tiger" in the Historic Paddock
A further eye-catcher this year is the Historic Paddock at the Nürburgring which has just been elaborately restored. This is where the pre-war cars feel at home and they'll be getting a visit in this the jubilee year of the automobile from their ancestor, the Benz Patented Motor Car of 1886. The "Lebenshilfe Gießen" is displaying a replica of the world's first automobile. The three-wheeler is the main prize of this years Oldtimer Charity Appeal in aid of handicapped people, which stand under the Motto "125 Jahre - Mobile Meilensteine“ / "125 years – mobile milestones" . The Munich newspaper "Neueste Nachrichten" wrote about the first drive of the Benz Patented Motor Car on the 18th September 1888: „The strange vehicle was generally admired and the young followed it in droves“. That's still how it is today. The one-cylinder with 0.9 hp is nonetheless 16 km/h quick, with a consumption of 10 litres per 100 kilometres. At that particular time in the past they already had the crankshaft with counterweights, electrical ignition and water cooling, technical components that are still found and used today and which can be closely looked at.
Back to the times of the economic wonder is where the meeting of the Messerschmitt Tiger takes us and which is being organised for the first time into the framework of the AvD-Oldtimer-Grand-Prix by the C.H.R.S.N. Quite a few Tiger pilots are traveling over from the United Kingdom in order to celebrate the, in the meantime very rare and coveted, roller mobile in the old Paddock and to get it moving on the Nordschleife. The Messerschmitt Tiger was initially presented at the IAA in 1957 and only 315 in total were built at the Regensburg factory.
Strolling around and celebrations
A contemporary atmosphere surrounding the corrugated-sheet garages at the Ring is catered for with historical petrol pumps, retailers and artists. The CC Kunst Galerie and an idea workshop offers for example automobile editions, driver portraits and racing scenes. The team from Carlottas's Mode will be displaying clothes and costumes from the decades after the turn of the century, amongst others a new "Vintage" collection. A piece of history is completed with the Swiss watchmaker Hanhart with whose stopwatches from Hanhart Historic Racing Team the laps will be timed. Not only has the historical "Racing-Cigar" a pit but also a cigar-roller as well, "5th Avenue", the official exclusive importer of Habanos in Germany. In the retail exhibiter area of the Grand-Prix Paddock, the range of products on offer encompasses book publishers with motor sport literature, spare-part and accessory dealers, an exclusive design workshop for driver clothing and for example even a supplier of custom- and hand made driving gloves. The traditional auctioneer COYS EUROPE will in addition be auctioning "Garage Gold", high value collectors- and enthusiast's motor cars.
To round off the exciting racing days there is for the drivers and visitors to the AvD-Oldtimer-Grand-Prix on Friday and on Saturday, in each case from 19.00 hours, a party with live music. Four session musicians from the Oldenburger region are going to swing and rock in the C.H.R.S.N. marquee in the Historic Paddock. There on Saturday at the same time the winners of the atmospheric evening race for two-seater racing cars and GT's up until 1960-61 are welcomed and paid tribute to.
